ABOUT SAAFF SOUTH AFRICA
SAAFF is a national association with members throughout the Republic of South Africa. While it attends to matters of national interest, its constitution permits regions to form chapters of the Association to deal with local issues. Five regions have qualified to establish their own chapters - Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape the Eastern Cape and the Border.
The Association is a non-profit organisation governed by a constitution which provides for a board of directors, with a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. Its directors are highly experienced, senior managers from member freight forwarding companies, who are nominated and voted for by these members. An Executive Officer administers and manages the Association's daily affairs.
Purpose
With an estimated five hundred agents operating in the country, it is recognised that an industry voice is a necessary imperative.
SAAFF liaises closely with many government departments and parastatal institutions, dealing with such matters such as customs, port health, trade permits, border controls, export control of perishable products, cargo handling and security at harbour terminals and airports, plant quality, railway services and road freight legislation.
The Association enables members to call on their collective knowledge and skills to determine and recommend practical and effective responses to the many challenges facing not only the forwarding and customs clearing industry, but also those affecting the commercial interests of their clients. This would be impossible to achieve by individual companies.
The Association is the vehicle by which agents who choose to become members can, in a cost effective manner, secure consistent and effective representation on forums which influence their business - so that technological and legislative developments do not compromise service quality and delivery, but rather enhance it, and that impediments to international trade are minimised.
In view of the international character of the freight forwarder, a close relationship with other freight forwarding associations is considered of vital importance, especially in a Southern African context.
FIATA
SAAFF is also a member of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA), and derives benefit from FIATA's international standing, its participation in many trade-related world forums, and its knowledge of international forwarding affairs.
CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT:
RECOGNISING that the most important ethical consideration is the supreme good as the ultimate end of human conduct, and because there are social customs and traditions which carry much weight although not embodied in laws and regulations of the legislative body, it is imperative to prescribe moral commitments to this Code of Ethical conduct. 1. EVERY MEMBER shall hold strictly confidential all information relating to the legitimate business affairs of its clients and shall not divulge any such information to a third party save with the express consent of its clients or upon the legitimate demands of the authorities.
2. NO MEMBER shall knowingly associate itself with any enterprise or business transaction of a questionable nature which could bring it into contention with this Code or conflict with the lawful requirements of the Authorities or reflect against the professional standing of the Association.
3. EVERY MEMBER shall accept the competitive private enterprise system as being the best means of ensuring the good of the community and of maintaining a high standard of service at fair prices.
4. EVERY MEMBER shall market its services on their own merits and shall refrain from denigrating the services or questioning the legitimate fees of a fellow member.
5. EVERY MEMBER shall bring its commitment to this Code of Ethical Conduct to the notice of its clients by displaying it prominently in a public area of each of its trading offices. It further undertakes to bring the Code to the notice of its staff, both now and in the future, to ensure that the commitment to it is maintained.

THE PROVINCE OF KWAZULU NATAL
Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) is situated on the Eastern seaboard of the Republic of South Africa. Best known for its Beaches, Mountains and Zulu culture it is the favourite destination for South African holidaymakers and attracts many foreign visitors to its game parks, magnificent scenery and superb coastline. Apart from tourism there are substantial other investments in the province. Sugar Cane, Beef, and Timber are leading agricultural products whilst motor vehicle assembly, motor vehicle components and paper are major contributors to the economy of the region.
Where KZN leads the country is in the size and scope of its harbours. The Port of Durban is the busiest port in Africa. The Container Terminal volumes are approaching 3.0m TEU’s per year, the Car terminal over 300,000 units annually. The various Multi Purpose Terminals handle large volumes of Bulk and Break Bulk cargo including granite, rice, steel, ferro alloys, aid cargo and fruit.
During the citrus season the port handles the export of the bulk of South African citrus exports to worldwide markets.
At Richards Bay, a city 150 km north of Durban, the largest port on the Continent is situated. The privately owned coal export terminal at Richards Bay has a throughput of 62 million tons of coal per annum and is the largest single coal terminal in the world. The Dry Bulk Terminals at the port are operated by South African Port Operations and handle some 12 million tons of bulk annually.
Members of SAAFF – KZN provide a pivotal link in the many supply chains that operate through the regions ports. Their responsibility in both arranging the clearance and on forwarding of cargo for clients throughout Southern Africa is critical to the sub continents international trade.
